DURING
the 16th century, Spanish merchants on their
voyage to Cebu passing by the San Bernardino
strait noticed that a mushroom cloud has engulfed
a cone shaped mountain from afar. They were
stunned and amazed of what they were witnessing:
it was a volcanic eruption.
Upon
arrival at their port of destination, word spread
that they have discovered a spectacular island
in the south that smoked, which is now known as
Albay.
This
is one of the most frequented provinces in the
Bicol region because of its strategic location
and great tourist destinations. Albay is surrounded
by small islands and directly faces the Pacific
Ocean on the eastern part.
The
province has connecting roads to the nearby provinces
of Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and to seaports for
the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate.
Albay is also directly connected with Manila via
train, plane or by bus.
The
most popular spot in this province is the ever
beautiful and majestic Mayon Volcano. Its cone
shape and periodic eruptions have attracted the
attention of both foreign and domestic tourists.
Albay is also home to different festivities celebrated
by its municipalities, the most popular and vibrant
of which is the Magayon Festival.
It
is a celebration and tribute to the legend of
the origins of Mayon Volcano, named after Daragang
Magayon, a beautiful lady who had misfortune in
love, and who eventually died heartbroken. Her
family noticed the small land where she was buried
start to grow bigger and bigger. The size of the
land grew until it started to erupt in the early
years. This, the village people believed, was
the pent up emotions of the lady suffering when
she was still alive and frustrated in love.
Many
believe that Mayon Volcano behaves like a lady
in love: moody and unpredictable. Seldom that
one can take a picture of in perfect condition;
most of the time clouds surround the volcano;
just like a lady who does not want to be disturbed
by suitors or simply wants to hide away. But when
she is in her best moods, one can take the most
beautiful shot of Mayon Volcano, whose color changes
from green to pale blue.
The
province also offers several adventures to visitors
that would make the stay memorable and fun: beaches,
cave explorations, trekking, outdoor camping and
other outdoor activities.Interacting with the
local populace is a treat in itself, as Bicolanos
are gentle and soft-spoken.
Albay
has three cities; Ligao, Tabaco and Legaspi. The
latter is the most developed, offering the communication
and transportation infrastructure.
Legaspi
City is also the regional center for Bicol as
most of the government offices are located. It
serves as the arrival and take-off points for
visitors coming from Manila going to the nearby
provinces.
With
the wide choices of tourist destinations available
in Albay, a week long stay would be a good idea.
Visitors can choose a three-star hotel accommodation
to 5 - star hotel accomodation. One should not
miss sampling the Bicol Express, a spicy meat-or-fish
dish cooked in coconut milk and liberally laced
with long green pepper.
When
you travel to the Philippines, consider visiting,
the gentle and welcoming Bicolano, and the fiery
food of Albay!
