Still queen of the hill, cream of the crop

Megastar Sharon Cuneta remains on top of the heap. No matter her long absence from the big screen, Sharon is never really out of the limelight. She’s kept busy by her talk show Sharon aired every week at ABS-CBN. The program was named as Best Entertainment Program at the 2007 Catholic Mass Media Awards. We are constantly reminded of her presence on TV via her numerous product endorsements.

The desire to devote more time for her family resulted in Sharon doing few movies. In fact, she hasn’t done a movie in four years. This year, though, expect the Megastar to appear in Caregiver, her comeback movie for Star Cinema, directed by Chito Roño.

This is Sharon’s first movie since Crying Ladies. It’s also her first film project after the birth of her youngest daughter, Miel. But the megastar corrected the impression that this
was the movie she was supposed to do with Aga Muhlach to be shot in London. She said a lot of people thought this was the long-delayed project she was supposed to do with Aga. The said project was announced last year but was shelved.

Ever since her beloved “Ate” Lorna Tolentino was the grand slam best actress winner in 1992 for her role in the movie Narito ang Puso Ko under Direk Chito’s guidance, Sharon has long wanted to do a movie with the boxoffice director and award-winning filmmaker. With Caregiver, she and Direk Chito will fly to London and Prague for a good two to three weeks of filming. They will, however, be shooting in Manila and Pampanga for a few weeks before flying off to Europe.

“I can start shooting na because I am more slim now,” said the megastar at the press launch of her new Sony BMG Music album titled Isn’t It Romantic Volume 2 held at Crowne Plaza Robinson’s Galleria early in December 2007. “Tita Malou (Santos) of Star Cinema said that I should be doing more movies and direk Chito really wanted us to start shoot na. He has no idea how much I appreciated this but he really wants me to feel confident about myself and the project.”

She admitted, “I’ve neglected myself because of my family. I know I should never neglect my family but in so doing, I neglected myself. Why did I do that when I could have taken care of my kids and myself at the same
time? But I am okay now and raring to go back to work.”

Major milestones

She also marks major milestones this year. She turned 42 on January 6th and threw a free concert at the Araneta Coliseum for fans. She’s also set to celebrate her 30th year in the music business on January 12. It was on this day that her uncle Tito Sotto told her to go to Vicor for an audition. And the rest was history.

“I have big preparations for this year…. I am now 30 years old as a singer, having started when I was 12,” said the megastar who’s very much elated that her album turned gold in just two days of its release in the market.

She’s also set to do a movie with GMA Films, either with Richard Gomez or Robin Padilla. She already had a meeting with Robin for their film project but the action star wanted another type of story so the project was put on hold. “You know, we have a shortage of leading men for actresses my age,” she mused.“There are a lot of talented young actors but okay lang kaya kung magiging leading man ko si John Lloyd Cruz? I could probably pull it off to have Piolo Pascual to be my leading man.”

She also plans a third volume of her love songs CD as well as another album she promises is “really something different from the usual stuff that I do.” She says it would be something young people of today would really appreciate.

With ex-husband Gabby Concepcion making his own film comeback under GMA Films together with Jolina Magdangal, would she agree to a tandem if offered?

“With regards to doing a movie with Gabby, I don’t really have a problem with that,” she said. “But first and foremost, whatever happens, whatever it is I decide, I have to put my family first. I have to think of how such decision will affect my husband and my family. (Husband) Kiko (Pangilinan) is a secure person to have married me. We have been married for 12 years.”

She added, “The Sharon-Gabby tandem is one of the most popular idols in local cinema. I know it is and I miss it too. I know it broke a lot of hearts when we broke up. Saka iba naman ang team up sa screen at sa totoong buhay. Sa akin, walang problema pero pag nag-team up kami hindi naman maiiwasan na maintriga. So huwag na lang kasi tahimik na ang buhay namin. I have little kids and he has a wife to protect. It’s hard when there are other people involved in the picture na puwedeng maapektuhan,” said Sharon .

At peace with Gabby

She is just as happy that Gabby seems to have found peace at last with his new family.

“I am happy that Gabby is happy and I am very thankful to his wife because KC was really raving about her. When Gabby’s life is going on smoothly, that says to me that my daughter’s life would be better pa so that would be my wish for him also. There’s no mean bone in my body. Ayoko rin patulan those people who malign me or tumitira sa akin,” continued Sharon .

With regards to KC, Sharon is very happy that her daughter is making a name for herself on her own, distinct and apart from her illustrious parents. She also adds that she never meddles with KC’s career as she lets her manager (Sandra Chavez) decide on the direction KC’s career would take.

“But I will support her all the way. If she wants me to do a movie or an album with her, I am volunteering my services. But the request should come from KC. Tutulungan ko siya, siyempre kasi anak ko pero whatever it is that she wants, doon ako kasi ayoko naman isipin ng mga tao na package deal kaming dalawa,”
said Sharon in parting.
