Poor Girl

After garnering media attention and support from various private and non-profit organizations, the 12-year old girl from Davao, who allegedly committed suicide due to poverty, may actually have been raped. An autopsy revealed lacerations on the girl’s genitals that may be an indication of rape.

Prior to the release of the autopsy report, everyone from President Gloria Arroyo to anti-poverty groups had said their piece about the death of Mariannet Amper. This after a suicide note addressed to GMA7’s public service program Wish Ko Lang was found near the girl’s body, stating how she wanted to get out of their impoverished situation but could not even go to school due to lack of resources. Many blame the government for not having a strong anti-poverty program. NGOs rushed to the aid of the Ampers. And Wish Ko Lang granted the girl’s wishes, albeit post-mortem, and gave the family a source of livelihood, scholarships for her siblings, a bicycle for her brother, and a backpack and school supplies for the young Mariannet.

But since the release of the news that the girl may have been raped, the Ampers are now under attack. Who could the culprit be? Was it the father, hence the shame of the daughter that pushed her to commit suicide? Was it one of her older siblings? Who was it? Everyone wants to know. And everyone is shouting for blood. Even Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who may have been embarrassed by a reported suicide of a child constituent due to his city’s poverty, is now calling for a criminal investigation on the girl Amper’s death. Even the father and her brothers were subjected to drug tests. Everyone is suspect—the family members first and foremost.

Inday is now a blogger!

Inday: I want to persevere in life. I want to break free from where I am. I want to travel around the world, see all the beautiful sights and experience different cultures. I want to learn the Pasa Doble and study Krav Maga. I want to be complete…

Inday: Thank you for your wonderful words of wisdom. But don’t you know that I already read all your writings? Unfortunately, I was disappointed because your two novels were written in spanish and latin. So, therefore, you are the ultimate violator of your own aphorism.
Dr. Rizal: (nosebleed)

She’s not leading by example

A Commission on Audit report shows that Malacañang has spent a whooping P2.38 billion of taxpayers’ money for 2006. Billions man, billions! This includes basic housekeeping expenses, salaries, benefits and bonuses of Malacañang employees, consultation fees, travel expenses, medicines, phone bills, and lots of other expenses that help keep the palace and its inhabitants in tip-top shape. The bill also includes “confidential expenses.”

But here’s the thing: In 2004, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called for the implementation of austerity measures for all government offices to help augment the budget. This is why in 2005, she proudly declared how the government was able to save up due to belt-tightening measures implemented by different offices. But the Commission on Audit report shows that the Office of the President spent almost half a billion more in 2005 than in 2004. Austerity? What austerity?

Much ado about ‘thunk’

I was at the Filipino Center in Seattle during the Veterans Day Celebration. I was able to get a copy of the Nov-15, 2007 issue of One Philippines. It was an interesting read. May I please point your attention to page 20 of your publication.  In the article entitled “How not to overstay your welcome”  the word “thunk” was mentioned twice.  The sentence was even highlighted. Is this an error of the writer which was not noticed by the editor and proofreader? Is this a new English word?

First of all, thank you for your interest in One Philippines. And for spotting a word that’s been called to our attention by ... our publisher! According to the Merriam Webster online dictionary, thunk is the “dialect past and past participle of think.” The Free Dictionary (www.thefreedictionary.com) also refers to it as “a dull, hollow sound: the thunk of a metal pipe striking a tree.” And the Urban Dictionary (www.urbandictionary.com) says that thunk is: “a question that makes you think about something you’ve never thought about before and that then makes your brain ache when you try.” It’s also “the noise your brain makes when it starts to think about such questions.” But my actual reference was the late great rock critic Lester Bangs who was quoted by another equally great rock critic Greil Marcus (now Bruce Springsteen’s manager) as saying: “Heaven was Detroit, Michigan. Who woulda thunk it?” Bangs was referring to the hometown of the Sixties rock and roll band, The Stooges. I hope this answers your question.  And thank you for taking the time to write us. We truly appreciate it! Keep reading One Philippines and we hope to hear from you again.
