Maja Salvador In the genes

When Maja Salvador received an acting award from the entertainment press for her performance in the 2006 Kris Aquino-Claudine Aquino blockbuster thriller Sukob, people took notice and quickly ascribed her win to genes. After all, the 19-year-old comes from the illustrious Salvador clan in showbiz (Philip is an uncle). She was discovered when her friend, who happened to be the daughter of an entertainment reporter, arranged for her to meet her dad who’s been estranged from the family.

It’s said that when ABS-CBN entertainment boss Charo Santos saw the new footage of the reunion, she instructed her people to look for the young girl. The gamble paid off.

Recently, Maja played the younger sister of Ryan Agoncillo in the movie My Kuya’s Wedding. She played opposite Jason Abalos.

Her latest project is the ABS-CBN teleserye Pangarap na Bituin, where she stars as Ruby, the youngest of the Jewel Sisters.

Aside from her acting prowess, Maja is also know for her flair in dancing. But can she hold her own against Rica and Sarah, both known for having exceptional pipes.

The young actress is aware that not all people would be pleased to see her in a role of a singer. She’s ready to accept criticisms especially from those who may question her credibility.

In tackling her role, Maja gets her inspiration from the people who believe she has what it takes to become a singer.

“I have a background in singing even before I entered showbiz. But I am not that confident But whenever people tell me to sing because I can do it, I get inspired and it somehow buoys up my confidence,” she says.

Maja knows she would really be questioned why she’s in the cast of Pangarap na Bituin since she’s cast alongside two certified singers, with one being a winner in a popular singing contest.

“I myself couldn’t believe that I was offered the role of a singer. But I consider this a challenge. When I accepted this role, I knew I had to prepare for it. I want to prove that I am up to the challenge,” says the award-winning young actress.

After appearing together in an episode of Your Song, the ABS-CBN bigwigs believe that the tandem of Maja and Jay-R Siaboc have what it takes to succeed. There’s unmistakable chemistry with the team-up, hence their teleserye team-up.

“It’s a challenge for us kung paano namin papakiligin ang mga tao. It’s also a challenge for me because I’ve been paired with other young actors like John Prats, John Wayne Sace and Jason Abalos. But our (me and Jay-r) story in Pangarap na Bituin is cute. The people will like it.”
