Tell us more about the pageant. After winning the crown, will you be sent to compete in a much bigger pageant?

No, there is no requirement to continue on to a bigger pageant, although I have been asked to compete in larger pageants but at the current moment have declined.

What does winning the crown mean for you?

Winning the pageant has opened my eyes to how truly genuine it is to be able to be two different ethnicities and how lucky I am to experience the best of both worlds. It symbolizes my pride in being both a Filipina and American woman.

What was the final question asked in the pageant and what was your answer?

(The question) was “Most young girls dream of becoming a beauty queen, what has motivated you to join the Miss Filipino American pageant of Western Washington?” My answer was, “I was motivated to join the Miss Filipino- American pageant because I wanted to grow. Throughout this pageant I have learned so much about the Filipino culture such as social values, traditions, music, songs and dances. I have also had the opportunity to meet these 5 wonderful ladies. This pageant has helped be grow into a young Filipino-American woman.”

What causes are you planning to promote now that you're the new Miss Fil-Am of Western Washington?

Last April during the family night sponsored by Kitsap County at Presidents Hall, I prepared messages promoting strong families for stronger communities.

Why did you enter the pageant?

The Ms. Fil-Am of Western Washington pageant first interested me when I became aware of how special it is to be half American and half Filipino. Entering the pageant gave me a chance to express my happiness and share with the community the joys of being both an American and Filipina.

What do you want to achieve in the future?

Life could bring many opportunities for me, at my age; I realize there are many doors open to me. I am interested in the medical field but who knows I may end up visiting the Philippines and experimenting in the acting and music industry; I am not sure where life will take me. What I would like to achieve is success in whatever career I partake in.

What has been the biggest disappointment in your life to date?

I do not really have any big disappointments or things I regret so far in my life. Of course, there has been the occasional bump in the road, but nothing too largely disappointing.

What is your best quality?

My friends tell me I have a knack for organizing events and get-togethers. I am relatively creative and artistic.

What is your worst quality?

My worst quality is that I am impatient.

You can only pick one word. Which word best describes you: sexy, smart, beautiful or talented?

And why? I consider myself talented because I am fortunate enough to excel in various activities such as soccer, basketball, singing, academics, etc. “Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.”

In your opinion, what made the judges decide to give you the title?

I think that my confidence, poise, and talents influenced the judges to crown me Miss Fil Am of Western Washington.

What is your biggest success in life?

So far, my biggest success has been winning the Miss Fil Am of Western Washington Pageant because not only was it a new experience but I gained knowledge of the Filipino culture, experience in performing in front of a large audience and growth as a young woman.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

I would first like to thank Chu-Chi Lokken for initially recruiting me and explaining the importance of the pageant. Next I would like to thank my parents for being supportive and motivating throughout the pageant but I really would like to thank Andy and Celia Austria for all of the hard work, dedication, and encouragement they gave me. The Austria’s spent countless hours preparing me for the pageant, this included singing and dancing practice, designing my dresses, and further educating me on Filipino values and traditions. I really appreciate all of their devotion—thank you so much.

On being Pinay: What do you think is the essence of being a Filipina?

The real meaning of being a Filipina is being charismatic, being helpful, humble yet proud, and honoring the culture and its values.

What Filipino traits are you most proud of? Which of these traits do you possess?

The traits which I am most proud of and those that I possess are being a hard worker, working with others for a common goal and being creative.

Who among the Filipinos you know do you most admire?

I admire my mother—she is a perfect example of a strong and successful Filipina woman.

How many times have you been in the Philippines?

Unfortunately, I have only had the chance to visit the Philippines once so far; this was in 6th grade, 2002. My most memorable experience while I was there was meeting all of my cousins for the first time and having them tour me around Olongapo. Going to the Philippines really opened my eyes to the beauty of living simply.

If there is anything you would like to do in the Philippines, what would it be?

I would like to visit my mother’s province in Samar because I am very interested in the town (where) she grew up in. I would also like to go to the Philippines to help, educate, and share with students my experience and learn more about my Filipino culture.

If there is anything you would like to change in the Philippines, what would it be?

I would like to change the fact that Filipinos are usually late for events, otherwise known as “Filipino Time.” (All in good humor)

Have you ever experienced getting discriminated for being a Filipino American?

Fortunately, I have not personally been discriminated against for being a Filipino American. Society is changing and multi-racial individuals are becoming more and more common. I believe that people are beginning to accept diversity—this is what America is known for. I also think that programs in schools and communities that appreciate and celebrate cultural diversity are proving effective.

What is your advice to Filipinos around the world who have experienced being at the receiving end of discrimination?

To overcome discrimination, you have to be proud of your identity and value your culture because in valuing your culture you acquire pride and strength.

What is your message to all Filipinos?

Mabuhay sa inyong lahat. God Bless.

*I would also like to mention and thank my sponsors; Alma Erfie, Auntie Bernie Holichair, Latisha Miller and Gloria Anthony, Heidi Chandoa, and Ben from Benco International.

Another special thanks to my friends, family, and everyone who supported me throughout this experience.
