DEAF
learning goes high-tech with the launching of the
PEN-International Learning Center at the De La Salle-College
of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB).
A
project of the Postsecondary
Education
Network (PEN) International and DLS-CSB,
the education facility is administered by the School
of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS).
It
was designed specifically for the developmental instruction
of deaf and hard-of-hearing students of DLS-CSB
SDEAS and PEN-International affiliate programs
in the Philippines.
Modeled
after the similarly-named facility based at the National
Technical Institute for the Deaf of the Rochester
Institute of Technology (NTID-RIT),
the PEN-LC employs the latest in
multimedia technologies as tools to address the remedial
and developmental needs of deaf and hard of hearing
students in the areas of reading & writing, math,
general education, and literacy. Its design ensures
that students and teachers have easy access to the
use of technologies and reading materials for one-on-one
or small group consultations and tutoring.
The
PEN-LC also serves as a resource
center for the enhancement of learner-centered teaching
and the development of appropriate learning materials
for Deaf students. Critical in these two areas is
the learning and teaching of the Filipino Sign Language.
Marking
the event was a short program featuring performances
by DLS-CSB’s resident deaf
artistic group, Silent Steps and audiovisual presentations
on the partnership of DLS-CSB and
