The American success story

Joy Basa-Gill lives the good life

Joy Basa-Gill has got it all.

For one, she has a very supportive husband who’s as hands-on as she is in raising their three-year old son. Her relationship with her brothers and sisters remain sturdy, something the distance between Europe, the Philippines, and United States has not withered. And her career as a realtor has never been better.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Joycelyn “Joy” Basa-Gill first went to Seattle in 1998 to meet her aunt prior to their European tour. On her second visit to the United States, a friend invited her to work as an accountant for a mortgage company in California. In 2001, she met her husband-to-be Jerry Gill whom he married a year later.

In June 2004, Joy worked as a loan officer where she learned the ropes in financing housing loans. Her penchant for scouting for houses prodded her to study becoming a realtor in Highline Community College. In September of the same year, Joy got her license as a realtor. She then joined Century 21 Real Estate Center.

Happily, becoming a realtor is not just another job for Joy. She persevered and took her new career very seriously. On her first year as a realtor, Century 21 awarded her for being number one among its top producers. She received a Centurion Trophy—an award given to realtors who have earned US$250,000 to US$350,000 in annual commissions. The award served as Joy’s pat-on-the-back and it gave her a go-signal to continue with her career as a realtor.

Don’t lie to your clients

Joy attributes her success to her knowledge in the real estate biz. She says that she walks her clients through the whole buying process, from choosing which investments would best suit their needs up to the processing of housing loans.

"I always see to it that my clients are well-represented in all their real estate needs,” Joy tells One Philippines. She prides herself and her company for being one of the most professional real estate agents in Washington.

She also believes that one of her major advantages as a realtor is that she doesn’t lie for the sake of closing a sale.

"(Clients) deserve the truth in the whole process of buying or selling,” says Joy. “I don’t push clients to decide on…which property to buy.” She believes that patience is something all realtors should always have for their clients.

Like many Filipinos working in the United States, Joy pampers her clients with the Pinoy’s brand of hospitality.

"I care about my clients,” says Joy. “I will give them the best service ever.”

Raising a ‘magalang’ son

These days, Joy is targeting to receive the Double Centurion Award. But while at it, she also makes sure that she shares her blessings with her family in Roxas City.

She also wants her son, RJ, to develop the Filipino value of being “magalang” (respectful), especially to the elders. Being very close to her immediate family, as well as to her cousins in Roxas City, Joy wants to integrate her son into their family in the Philippines. In her trip last December, she brought her husband and son with her and the Gill family stayed in Roxas City for a month.

"My son enjoyed his stay because he has so many cousins playing with him,” Joy gladly shares with One Philippines. “Ayaw na ngang umuwi.”

Asked what she thinks 2007 holds, Joy says that “It all depends on one’s motivation and determination to change or not to change, to succeed or to fail, to improve or to remain the same.”

But after all that was said, Joy attributes her success to God. After having received the Centurion Award, Joy has been asked by many about where she gets her clients. To which she always responds, “From heaven.”

"I believe they are all God’s blessings,” says Joy of her clients. “I ask Him to bless me all the time so that I can also be a blessing to others.”

To Joy, her real secret to success is: “I pray and I work hard!”
